Betsey Johnson – The Queen of Funky Fashion

Sunday, October 23, at   LA Fashion Week at Sunset Gower Studios, Betsey Johnson unveiled yet another classic collection. As you may know, over a decade ago, Betsey Johnson was diagnosed with breast cancer, and although when first diagnosed, she confided only in her daughter Lulu, today, she is a survivor and she loudly and proudly supports breast cancer awareness through fashion events, parties and donations to the non-profit organization, Fashion Targets Breast Cancer, and her fashion sense is still rockin’. Betsey Johnson is known for her wild fashion sense and funky fusions of fabrics and styles. We saw everything from tartan plaid paired with red leopard and lace, to school lessons, yes a “teach me a lesson” bright yellow ruler knit top.  As always, her patterns and fabrics in combination with her wild ideas rocked the runway. A personal favorite was the pink tutu dress, accented by a dark brown leopard print coat (reminiscent of my first $600 faux leopard coat bought 20 years ago, a classic Betsey Johnson I still wear today.) The pink zipper-top bustier ruffled dress worn with a crocheted black sweater, accented with a floral trim was also a crowd pleaser.

The collection had a variety of minis, from skirts to dresses, all with bustier corset tops in the bubble or tutu style. One stunning design was the burgundy velvet bustier corset dress accented by a huge pink ribbon set across the chest. It had a hot pink ruffled tutu bottom with light pink trim that bounced about the runway. Velvet, fur and lace, all classic to Betsey Johnson’s style, made a plentiful appearance. There were bold colors and patterns mismatched in a way that only Johnson can pull off. Always a fan of a woman I consider to be a goddess of the fashion world.

Fashion Week LA: Tumbler and Tipsy Sparkles and Shines

Fashion Week was fun, but the Tumbler and Tipsy show was a whole new level of fun.   I witnessed a glitter explosion as the runway sparkled and shined with sequins galore! Michael Kuluva’s line seems to be a hit with celebs too- the gorgeous Matthew Morrison was sitting right in front of me!  I have personally met Michael, and he is so friendly, funny, and beyond creative. I couldn’t believe that he was an Olympic Figure Skater when he was younger!

The show began with models walking out in shorts in blue, purple, and gray. Models wore black tights under the shorts which made a pretty wild short into something a tiny bit more demure. The top pieces showed some skin, either having one clasp holding a sequined cape together, or pairing a short muscle tummy top with high wasted shorts.  One model came out in shorts wearing a gray, simple tee, silk screened with neon designs.  The next look was something I would absolutely wear- the model was dressed in a flowy, backless dress that was so versatile- could be worn to work, or out- depending on how you choose to accessorize. Speaking of accessorize…. our simply dressed model was draped with tons of Tumbler and Tipsys’ signature necklaces- painted corks hung on chains! These went with the neon theme, and were paired with long chain necklaces. When a model walked out in a blue sequined short dress (later, there was also a purple!), I couldn’t believe it- I have been looking for a dress like that for months for my upcoming birthday!  I liked the concept of the clear shirts and jackets (looked almost like saran wrap- that’s how see through they were), but I’m not sure I would wear something that daring.  Ever since I saw a sequined jacket on Lauren Conrad, I’ve desperately been on the lookout for my own- so, when I saw a sequined gray blazer, I just about fell out of my seat-I am so adding that to my shopping list!  Move over superman, Tumbler and Tipsy has made a cape even you would die for! Capes were so versatile-some were perfect for a cold day and looked super cozy, and others were covered in square sequins (Michael explained to me that he only uses these because they’re much prettier than regular ones. Also, he explained that if one falls off, the whole string of sequins doesn’t too!).

At the end of the show, Michael came out with an enormous smile, thanking and waving to the packed room. It’s pretty much a guarantee that we will be seeing more and more of Tumbler and Tipsy- on the street and the red carpet!
